Job losses loom at NIPOST
Job losses loom at NIPOST
Everest Amaefule, Abuja
There are indications that some senior
managers of the Nigerian Postal System will soon lose their jobs in a
restructuring exercise aimed at repositioning the agency.
Sources said the exercise, which will
also involve posting of some senior managers of NIPOST to other
departments, would ensure effective control and loyalty to the Acting
Postmaster-General/Chief Executive Officer of the agency, Mr. Richard
Balami.
Other restructuring programmes, which
have been in incubation for some time, include commercialisation and
financial inclusion projects meant to enable NIPOST to provide some
banking services to rural dwellers in collaboration with the Central
Bank of Nigeria.
In a telephone interview with our
correspondent, Balami confirmed that some restructuring would take place
but could not confirm that some top management officers of NIPOST would
lose their jobs.
He simply said, “That one, I don’t know.”
Balami became the acting
postmaster-general in March when his predecessor was sacked in
controversial circumstances following a disagreement with the Ministry
of Communications over appointment of stamp duty agents.
Our correspondent learnt that the
Minister of Communications, Mr. Adebayo Shittu, had recommended a
candidate to President Muhammadu Buhari for appointment as the
substantive Postmaster-General of the Federation, following a process of
recruitment that threw the door open to both staff and non-staff
members of NIPOST.
